MATTHEW RUSS

Matt was born in Portland, Maine and raised in nearby Cape Elizabeth. In 1996 he earned a B.A. from Colby College, where he majored in studio art with a concentration in oil painting. During his junior year, he studied at the Crawford College of Art in Cork, Ireland. He currently resides in Waterville with his wife, KC.

Matt has explored many parts of Maine by foot, snowshoe, and boat, and he celebrates Maine’s landscape in his paintings. He always paints from life, working outdoors in all seasons and often backpacking into remote locations. He especially enjoys painting in protected lands, such as the Kennebec Highlands and the Morse Mountain Conservation Area.

Matt has shown his work at The Framemakers in Waterville, the Window Tree Gallery in Brunswick, Clementine Restaurant in Brunswick, and the Maine Lakes Resource Center in Belgrade Lakes Village. He has contributed to the Maine Audubon Society art auction in Falmouth, and to the Maine College of Art auction in Portland. He has also completed commissions for individuals and institutions, including Colby College’s Environmental Studies Department and Piampiano Law Offices in Yarmouth.

Matt received the Roderick A. Robinson Memorial Award for Realistic Mainescape at the 2011 Maine Open Juried Art Show.
